文章认为如何对待中国传统文化，从根本上讲是一个如何认识和处理现代化和民族化的关系问题，而问题的实质是走什么样的现代化的道路问题，我们要走建设有中国特色的社会主义现代化的道路，就必须坚持批判继承和超越创新的辩证统一，这才是对待传统文化应有的理性精神和科学态度。文章论述了要实现这一辩证统一绝不只是一个纯思辨的问题，更重要的乃是一个社会主义现代化建设实践的历史过程。在这一过程中，努力培养新生的社会主义文化主体，树立广阔的文化胸怀和理论视域，积极投身于社会主义市场经济的建设，就是十分重要和非常现实的主体条件，也是走出在如何对待传统文化问题上各种误区的正确途径。
