滾切式挖沟机是现代挖掘长距离沟堑的主要机械。它能作连续不断的挖掘,并且能当即把挖下的土堆在一旁。这种机械的重量小,消耗动力很少,而生产能力却很高,比大型单斗挖掘机高得多;而且能较容易地挖掘密实的乃至比较坚硬的土壤。对于生产能力相同、挖沟的大小也相同的挖沟机械,滾切式挖沟机的重量不仅远比单斗式挖掘机小,而且也比链斗式挖沟机小。滾切式挖沟机的工作机构比较坚固,所以它切割土壤的速度也高于链斗式挖沟机。
