在湘西边陲，湘、川、黔三省接壤处，有一座小城，因城西有一凤凰山，为取其吉祥之意，小城起名凤凰。已故作家沈从文先生的《边城》，使得这座小城蜚声海内外，故而又叫边城。凤凰是沟通湘川黔三省之交通要道，历来为人们所重视，旧时更是边陲重镇，军事要地。据《凤凰厅志》记载：“凤凰厅属五溪要地，南据楚尾，西接黔边，东控辰沅，北永，镇道大员同驻其间，营制星罗，扼各路之咽喉”。为防苗民叛乱，清乾隆嘉庆年间这个居民不足三、四千的地方，在各处的正规驻军却达五、六千之众。阿拉营、黄丝桥古城、古碉堡、苗疆边墙都是当时驻军的遗迹。今天的凤凰更是凭借着独特的地理位置，便捷的陆路交通成为湘、川、黔三省边区苗民的物资交流中心。

The regular garrison in various places reached five or six thousand people. Alacao, Huangsi Bridge ancient city, ancient bunker, Miao border are the remains of the garrison. Today’s Phoenix is relying on its unique geographical location, convenient land transport as Hunan, Sichuan and Guizhou provinces border area Miao people’s material exchange center.
