This paper constructs an analog corpus with three English versions of A Dream of Red Mansions and four English classical novels, and on this basis, compares the translated versions of A Dream of Red Mansions with those of the English original in lexical and syntactic terms. These features are in turn used to test Mona Baker’s three translational common assumptions, that is, “Explicit ” “Normalization ” and “Reduced ”. The results show that the two common translational assumptions of “simplification ” and “normalization ” are supported in the translation of “A Dream of Red Mansions”, and the “explicit ” assumption only obtains partial support. This study provides new evidence for the test of translation commonality hypothesis in the English translation of Chinese literary works.
