Two parasites of five species of rats were investigated in Yangon for two years. Five species of rats are Rattus rattus, R. exulans, R. norvegicus, Bandicota bengalensis and Suncus murinus. Four species of fleas were collected: Xenopsylla astia and X. cheopis, Ctenocephalides felis and Echidnophaga gallinacea. The last two fleas are less than 1% of the total number of fleas harvested. The first three species of fleas are known fleas that have the vector capacity to transmit plague. Two species of fleas were found on all five hosts, but X.astia was the major parasitic flea of R.exulans and S.murinus. The two species of flea flew almost the same amount on R.rattus, with a ratio of X.astia to X.cheopis of 3.8: 1.
