The authors have previously demonstrated that prostacyclin (PGI_2) has the effect of inhibiting uterine muscle autonomic activity. PGI_2 has two major metabolites, 6-keto PGF_ (1α) (6KF) and 6-keto PGE_1 (6KE). The former has shown little effect on uterine muscle activity. The author’s purpose is to observe the latter’s effect on uterine muscle activity. The study was conducted on female sheep under bilateral oophorectomy under ether anesthesia. One balloon was inserted into each uterine horn. The balloon catheter was connected to a pressure transducer and a Grass multi-recorder to record intrauterine pressure (IUP). Three pairs of electromyography (EMG) electrodes were sewn to the uterine myometrium on the side of the oviduct, middle and neck of the uterine horn. The EMG signal is processed on a wideband AC preamplifier using a half-amplitude 10 kHz low-pass filter. Femoral artery, vein and external jugular vein catheter for administration.
