In the modernization of an electric steel mill or the construction of a new electric steel mill, companies face the choice between AC or DC electric arc furnaces, in which case the electrical design parameters and consumption values have a significant economic impact. This article clearly outlines some of the key points to be aware of when comparing two types of furnaces. According to the German VDE regulation, the output of the EAF is limited to about 96 MW when the tapping capacity is 160 t and its annual output can reach 1.2 million t. Depending on the voltage and length of the arc and on the current carrying capacity of the graphite electrode, the DC arc furnace power is limited to similar values. The actual assessment of the graphite electrode consumption point of view, it is clear that the lower DC arc furnace production costs can only be achieved through energy conservation. The main advantages of DC arc furnaces are stable melting and smaller voltage fluctuations in the supply network. And this advantage is not obvious in the strong power grid, in addition to the bottom electrode DC arc furnace is the disadvantage of higher investment costs.
