本文的统计数据证明,赵元任提出的汉语主语强烈地倾向于有定的观点符合事实,宾语强烈地倾向于无定的观点不符合事实,汉语宾语也倾向于有定,只是有定宾语的数量比主语低。受信息传递原则的作用,有定成分可以自由地作主语、宾语,无定成分由于作主语很受限制,绝大多数都作宾语;由于有定成分有经济表达的功能,所以话语中有定成分的数量远远大于无定成分。信息传递原则与经济原则在主语位置上不竞争,绝大多数主语是有定的;信息传递原则与经济原则在宾语位置上竞争,大多数宾语也是有定的,但数量低于主语。
