Despite many unfavorable factors and changing economic conditions, the unit demand for unit air conditioners in the United States remains stable. According to the American Institute of Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration (ARI), in 2003, the total production volume of unit air conditioners and unitary air source heat pump companies was a record 6.8 million units, an increase of 1% over 2002. Among them, unit air-source heat pump shipments were 1.63 million sets, which was 9.6 more than that in 2002 (1.48 million sets).
