American acoustics engineers have now invented a high-sensitivity loudspeaker system to “bug-hear” pests in cotton buds, albeit limited to listening to chewing and creeping sounds of insects. This approach may be the most effective way to monitor the large number of pests infesting many crops. Designed by Robert Hicklin and his colleagues at Mississippi’s National Center for Physical Acoustics, the system first tested the monitoring of red bollworm that harms cotton growth. Farmers often control the pink bollworm by applying insecticide, sex-depressant, and sterilizing insects from the aircraft to stop their breeding. To determine which technology to use and where
