The International Astronomical Association, which comprises 7,000 members in more than 50 countries, meets every three years. Its 20th Congress was held in Baltimore, the United States, from August 1 to 11, 1988. There were nearly 1,700 scholars from all over the world. There are over 600 scientists in the United States, 70 respectively in France, Britain, Japan, Canada and Italy, and 15 in the Soviet scientific delegation. Approximately 1,000 reports were heard at the meeting and about 250 seminars were organized by 40 members. The first observation report is on Halley's Comet.
