据《国语·鲁语》载,季文子当过鲁宣公、成公两代国君的相,但家里没有穿丝绸衣服的妾,没有喂粮食的马。有一次,大夫仲孙它劝季文子说:“您是鲁国的上卿,当了两代国君的相,妾不穿丝绸,马不吃粮食,人们将会认为您是吝啬,而且对鲁国也不够光彩呀!”季文子回答说:“我也愿意让妾穿上丝绸衣服,马能吃到粮食。不过我看百姓们吃穿粗恶的还多着呢,我因此不敢那样做。若我却把妾和马养得那样美,这就不成为国君的相了,而且我听说德行高尚才能给国家增光,却没有听说妾美马肥能给国家增加光彩的。”
