It was the worst day at school I’d ever had! I couldn’t think. I couldn’t answer any questions. I couldn’t even remember what 2 plus 2 came to!
The Memory Man was teaching us a lesson.
That afternoon I went home alone. I sat in my room, staring at the wall.
“Eugene…” It was Mum, “you’ve got a vistitor…”
I guessed it was Azizul, feeling lonely.
“Hello, Eugene.”
I alomost jumped. There, on the sofa, was Samantha Ho.
“What happened?” she asked.
“I don’t know,” I mumbled, staring at my hands. “Just a bad day, I guess.”
“Are you sure?” she said. “This morning you and Azizul were staring at the ground, like you could see something there, something really scary..” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “Was it a snake?”
“Huh?” I was shaking with terror. “H-h-how do you know?”
Her eyes were different now, half-closed, studying me, as though she was trying to decide whether she could trust me. “And you heard something, too,” she said.
“Like—a wind blowing.”
She nodded. “What did he call himself?” she asked in a very low voice.
I looked into her eyes. I could suddenly see how troubled she was.
“The Memory Man…” I barely breathed the words, so nobody could hear hem except her. “You mean, you’ve seen him, too?”
