Suzanne Berger argues that the new manufacturing sector does not necessarily mean a larger manufacturing unit, but a new addition of jobs, but it will mean a radical change in existing business and technology models. The drastic reduction in US manufacturing job opportunities is not just the result of productivity gains, but also due to the huge surpluses in China’s manufacturing industry - do these global trends mean that the manufacturing industries in high-wage countries have a poor future? And, at the moment, can manufacturing in the United States still need so much domestic production at a time when processing and manufacturing goods that have become a commodity and can be easily purchased abroad with very little money?
