From February 19 to August 28, 1983, a symposium on classical Chinese literature for ethnic minorities in Xinjiang held by the Xinjiang Academy of Social Sciences was held at the Friendship Hotel in Urumqi. Attending the meeting were representatives of eight ethnic minorities in Xinjiang and a total of over 170 experts and scholars from provinces, autonomous regions including Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Qinghai and Beijing. The leaders of the party and government in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region made speeches successively at the opening and closing ceremonies, including Tiegul Dawamat, Jainabul, Ba Dai and Fu Wen.
