1913年9月20日,出生在黑龙江省阿城县(今哈尔滨市阿城区)一个满族镶黄旗家庭,起名李书堂。1920年秋,进阿城县西营小学一年级读书。受满族民间文学和中国传统道德的熏陶,喜欢国文。1921年因家里无钱做校服,被学校以有碍校容为名逐出校门,失去求学权利。1922年入珠河县立第二小学读书。1926年秋,小学毕业。1927年以优异成绩进入哈尔滨一中学习。1928年夏初,转入一面坡东省特区第六中学读书。
