[Translator’s Preface] Marianne Moore (1887-1972) is one of the core members of the modern American poet group. Born in Kirkwood, Missouri, USA, she grew up in a family with a missing father and was influenced deeply by her grandparents and her mother from an early age with serious religious beliefs and moral feelings. From about 1915, Moore focused on poetry and gradually entered the poetry circle, admired by such poets as H.D., Eliot, Pound and Stevens. She insisted on unique themes, forms, styles and positions in writing. She has biologist-like meticulous observation, obscure hard words, hidden in the seemingly rigid verse of deep emotion. Her poems emphasize the moral commitment of poetry, and she insists that poet’s integrity will bring precious light to poetry. Moore received several awards, including the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, and when she accepted the National Book Award, she commented with a hint of joking but not without modesty: My work is called poetry Because I can not do other sorts of them, and I’m happy cough.
