The NSF has so far established 14 Engineering Research Centers, each NSF funding of $ 2-3 million per center; providing for a first phase of funding of five years and a detailed on-site review by the end of the third year. If the result of the review is satisfactory, it can be extended for three years on the basis of the first phase of five years. After another three years after the review, the longest period of funding up to 11 years. Four of the six engineering research centers built in 1985 passed the mid-term review last year. The four engineering research centers are: Columbia University Communication Engineering Research Center, MIT Biotechnology Processing Engineering Research Center, Purdue University Intelligent System
