Objective: To observe the changes of vasostatin-2 (VS-2) levels in peripheral blood of patients with mild-to-moderate essential hypertension without drug treatment and to clarify its clinical significance. Methods: The serum levels of VS-2 in 89 patients with essential hypertension and 76 normal controls were measured by ELISA. The BMI and resting heart rate were compared. Results: Compared with the control group, plasma levels of VS-2 in hypertensive group were significantly higher than those in the control group [(0.24 ± 0.04) pg / ml: (0.32 ± 0.06) pg / ml, P <0.05]. Pearson correlation analysis showed that mean arterial pressure and resting heart rate were positively correlated with VS-2 levels (r = 0.301,0.427, all P <0.01), while age, BMI, serum lipids and fasting blood glucose had no correlation with VS-2 levels. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that mean arterial pressure and resting heart rate were independent influencing factors of plasma VS-2 level (all P <0.05) after adjusting for age, BMI, blood lipids, blood glucose and other factors. CONCLUSIONS: Untreated patients with essential hypertension have elevated levels of VS-2 in the peripheral blood, suggesting that their antagonistic over-activation of the sympathetic nervous system may play a cardiovascular protective role in the pathogenesis of hypertension.
