菱苦土(又名轻烧镁)是提取镁砂的一种副产品(菱镁石),产于辽宁省营口、丹东等地区。这种菱镁石经过烧结、粉碎后即为菱苦土粉。这种菱苦土粉与砂石和卤水混合,具有很好的刚性,每平方米承压能力达1千公斤以上。与锯末和卤水混合,具有一定的靱性和强度,可以钉钉、锯断,也可用鉋、钻、车、铣等各种机床加工,性能和木材相似。近两年来,为解决木材不足,以菱苦土代木,用于工业和基本建设中,仅1971年代用木材约2万立方米。代用项目有电纜盘、门窗、房架、楼板等。
