传说太平军乘胜北伐时,驻扎在仪征城外,先行官让小校向主将请示行军路线。此时,主将正在军中大帐议事,随手写下手令。先行官拿到手令一看:“烧城而走!”虽然感到吃惊,但是又不敢违抗命令。于是,下令每人准备一大把柴火,拂晓前火光冲天,烧了仪征城。事后,主将责问为何烧城,先行官取出手令,主将捶胸顿足:“我把‘绕’字写成了‘烧’字,好端端的仪征城顷刻化为灰烬,这都是我的错啊!”
