The unique cultural background and linguistic features of ethnic literary works make them unfamiliar with features and give readers a completely new aesthetic experience, which is an important manifestation of their literary nature and value. This kind of defamiliarization should be reproduced when translating minority literary works. The novel “Settled Down in Dust”, a novel written by Tibetan writer Alain, obtained a high degree of literary criticism from a large number of unfamiliar linguistic phenomena, while the translations of Ge Haowen and Lin Lijun also won the favor of the English-speaking world. Studying the translation of defamiliarization will help to improve the quality of translation of minority literary works. This article mainly analyzes the translator’s translation methods and effects on defamiliarization from the aspects of vocabulary, syntax and rhetoric. The study found that minority literary translation can achieve defamiliarization in the way of literal translation. When translating minority literary works, attention should be paid to identifying the use of defamiliarization of the original works and using appropriate translation methods to convey the theme and aesthetic functions of the original works, not just the content translation.
