欣赏石的鉴评,自从北宋米芾提出“瘦、皱、漏、透”四字评价太湖石以来,赏石界一直在寻找一种对任何种类的赏石品种都能适用的鉴评标准。宋代苏轼在“瘦、皱、漏、透”的基础上增添一个“丑”字。清代书画家郑燮在题画石时称:“米元章论石,曰瘦,曰皱,曰漏,曰透,可谓尽石之妙矣。东坡又曰:‘石文而丑’,一丑字则石之千态万状皆以此出。彼元章但知好之为好,而不知陋劣之中有至好也”。又说:“燮画此石,丑石也,丑而雄,丑而秀”。以“瘦、漏、透、皱、丑”这五个字来看,都是指石品的外表形态,前四字指具体特征,后面的“丑”指石品总体外观。笔者曾对太湖石进行过仔细研究,并多次深入太湖石产地进行考察。“瘦、皱、漏、透”只是太湖石的一般特征,可以说凡是地道的太湖石都具
