Hawthorne ’s writing by Hester and Cao Yu is the famous feminine image with distinctive features and rebellious spirit in the literary world. Their experiences are quite similar. As victims of the times and society, they all made various efforts to confront the dark forces for the pursuit of love and happiness, but ended up with varying degrees of tragedy. Combining these two works, this article compares the two women’s tragic fates and focuses on the subjective and objective reasons for the formation of their tragedies. It also reveals that in the absence of human rights system, the pursuit of individual liberation and freedom of marriage Is an impracticable literary proposition that can only achieve true success through fundamental social changes.
