民国奇人钱化佛(1884-1964年),名苏汉、字玉斋,世代居江苏武进(现常州武进区)。自古以来,武进便是江南人才辈出之地,据考证在中国历史上武进曾出过一千五百多位进士。清末时,武进的有钱人家多送子女出门读书、学医或习绘画。钱化佛的出身与家事不详,仅从与他合著《三十年来之上海》一书的文史学家郑逸梅口中形容他“为了生计,读书不多,文化程度属于一般,好在他收藏许多书报和实物”可以推论,钱化佛并不是出身于官商大
