Zong Que was a legendary officer in the Southern and Northern Dynasties. When he was young, his uncle asked him what aspiration he had, to which he answered: “I am willing to take the long wind to shatter the wave spreading for thousands of miles.”
When he was fourteen, his village was attacked by a dozen of bandits. Zong Que bravely came out and drove away those bandits.
After reaching the adulthood, he joined the army as a lieutenant. Then the court sent out the army to take an expedition against the State of Linyi (today’s Vietnam). Linyi released a herd of elephants to the battle, against which the Chinese soldiers cannot win. At the tense moment, Zong Que made several fake lions and put them in front of elephants, which were scared away by the fake lions. After winning this battle, Zong Que and his soldiers immediately defeated Linyi and took a lot of precious gems and treasures. But Zong Que did not take any of them. He even wore the same clothes which he wore at the beginning of the war.
When Zong Que was still an average person, his town person Yu Ye was wealthy and influential. One day he hosted a banquet for his town persons. The banquet had different kinds of delicious dishes that covered a 3-meter-long desk. However, when Zong Que came, Yu Ye only gave him coarse cereals and told the guests: “Zong Que was a poor who got used to simple and rough diets.” Zong Que did not complain; instead, he got him stuffed with coarse cereals.
Later Zong Que became the magistrate of Yuzhou. He employed Yu Ye as the Zhangshi (secretary-general in today’s governmental organization).
