The Qiang nationality was an ancient ethic group in China. In the Han Dynasty, they were driven to the northwest of Central Plain and lived a nomadic life.
During the first year of the reign of Emperor Xuan of Han, the Qiang people staged a rebellion against the Han Dynasty. Emperor Xuan decided to send a troop to put down the rebel. He summoned his ministers and generals to discuss about this. When he asked who could lead the troop, Zhao Chongguo, a general who was 73 years old, volunteered to take this position. Zhao Chongguo went on an expedition to the borderland several times and clearly knew the situation and geography there. Thus Emperor Xuan trusted him very much.
Emperor Xuan asked him: “How many soldiers should we send?”
Zhao Chongguo answered: “it is better to see the situation once than to hear about it one hundred times. It is hard to guess about the situation of battlefield from a remote place. I would like to go to Jincheng (today’s Lanzhou, Gansu) and investigated about the situation before reporting it to Your Majesty.”
Emperor Xuan agreed on his advice. Then Zhao Chongguo led a small group of people to Jincheng. After getting all the information about the rebel army, he fixed the right battle strategies and reported it to Emperor Xuan. Before long the court sent out a troop and put down the rebel very soon.
