通联工作会议期间,我们参观采访了古城博物馆、百亩千池养鲍场、簕杜鹃公园、同富工业区、万方广场、文化站、海湾度假区等生产、生活、文化体育设施,对大鹏人实践邓小平“两手抓、两手都要硬”的伟大理论,在大鹏这片古老而又富有青春活力的土地上,辛勤耕耘、播种,开拓出一片苍翠欲滴、叶茂花繁的文化体育绿洲,赞叹不已,感触良深。大鹏面积82平方公里,本地常住人口7千,外来职工3.5万。改革开放前,经济落后,文化体育设施落后,素有深圳市的西伯利亚之称。80年代初,全镇只有一间露天人民会堂,早晚播放一段时间的广播,收看香港电视成了大鹏人的主要文化娱乐活动。体育排不上名次,被人戏称为“文化体育沙漠”。
