吕洞宾是历史上实有的人物,《宋史》及许多北宋文献资料均述及其人。据近年发现的墓志资料,推测其生年在唐元和年间(约819年),曾与李后主、陈抟、丁谓、张洎、王安石等交往,至北宋中期仍有形迹,年寿甚长。其学术功绩,在于系统建立内丹养生学说,成为道教南北二宗的共祖。
