长期以来,我国的艺术教育模式大体上是走一种培养高精尖艺术人才的路子。孔祥东本人就是从这种培养模式中走出来的艺术家。他认为中国目前艺术教育的最大缺陷恰恰在于过早地给孩子定位,过早地让学生放弃了文化基础知识的学习;他们一般到了大梦方醒的时候才明白,自己的知识面已完全跟不上时代的发展了。现在的一些音乐学院、戏剧学院以及其他一些艺术院校,往往只注重对专业的培养,而在其他的方面少培养或不培养。我们的学生,特别是一些专业音乐院校的学生,虽然早年拿过国际性大奖,但到成年后,与那些“大器晚成”的外国同行相比,却显得后劲不足。而后者达到了一定的知识积累,他们的爆发是持续的,是高尖端的,是专业的大型的人才。后续不强的关键问题是文化基础没打好,也就是说我们过去对艺术教育的认识是有偏颇的,是太高精尖了,“技术、专业第一,文化课、基础课第二”。这些观念需要转变,艺术教育首先要强调学生的全面发展,文化修养对搞艺术的人来说,是应该具备的最重要的素质。现代的艺术家,不单单要精于专业,他应该是个全才,他要懂得管理,懂得社交,更要懂得生活。我们的国家和民族期待着大师级的艺术家的诞生,但真正的大师是从生活中走出来的,而不是从高精尖的象牙塔系统中闷造出来的……
