红铃虫历年发生严重。当第一代发生时,因棉株上只有花蕾,故即以花蕾为食源。幼虫在花蕾内取食为害成长到三至四龄时,花已开放,形成“虫花”。历年第一代每亩虫花数最少年1261朵,最多年达12419朵,历年平均5253朵。虫花一般均脱落,据1963、1965年观察,虫花脱落率高达94～100％。
