王国维与胡适,都熟稔中国传统文化,又都熟稔西学,对两者都下了很深的功夫。但近人读他俩的著作,每有不同的感受,如王元化先生就这样说:读胡适书觉过时,读王国维书却不觉过时。胡适吸取西学新义未融入中国文化,王国维却不仅能融入,且又自生新义。(见《清园夜读·后记》)这里,王元化以高度概括的语言,点明了王国维在治学方面所以远胜胡适,在于他能将新义与旧学融会贯通,从而又亮出了自己的新见解。没有这种融会,也就无从自生新义,则西学与旧学依然是方枘圆凿的两截。显然,治学之难,不在能否死背硬记,不在能否广泛涉猎,而在能否
