OBJECTIVE: To study the relationship between neuronal injury and the metabolic changes of cerebral cortex leukotriene (LTC4), cyclic adenosine (cAMP) and oxygen free radical (OFR) after repeated cerebral ischemia. Methods: The levels of LTC4, cAMP, SOD and MDA in rats with recurrent and single cerebral ischemia were compared and their pathological changes were observed. Results: The levels of cAMP, LTC1 and SOD in the early stage of repeated ischemia and reperfusion were significantly increased, the activity of SOD was significantly decreased, the delay of MDA was significantly increased, and the damage of cortical neurons was significantly heavier than that of the single ischemia group. CONCLUSION: Both LTC4, cAMP and OFR are involved in the pathogenesis of recurrent ischemic brain damage, which may be related to Ca ++ mediated arachidonic acid (AA) waterfall effect.
