子日:小人不耻不仁,不畏不义,不见利不劝,不威不惩,小惩而大诫,此小人之福也。易日:“履校灭趾,无咎。”此之谓也。这句话的原意是:孔子说:小人不以行不仁之事为羞耻,不因行不义之事而有所畏惧,不见到利益就不知努力去做,不用威刑就感受不到惩罚,小的惩罚会使他受到大的戒惧,这是小人的福气。所以《周易》说:“脚上戴着刑具掩盖了脚趾,无咎。”就是这个道理。小人是什么样的?孔子用四个否定之否定的句式,描绘了小人为人处世的心态、动机、诉求以及后果。
