开发建设风景区,保护文化古迹,是当前建设中一项重要任务。人们游览名山胜地,不仅要览胜寻幽,更求访古探源,以领略古老文明的特色。“岳为山高而尊者”。古人赋予了它的特殊地位,所谓“五岳归来不看山”正表达了人们对它的赞叹。南岳的特色,前人作过不少描绘和比较;“恒山如行,岱山如坐,华山如立,嵩山如卧。唯有南岳独为飞,朱鸟展翅垂云大。四旁各展百十里,环侍主峰如辅左”,形象地勾画了它的自然面貌。“南岳独秀”,“无峰不秀,无泉不灵”,深刻地揭示了山色的奥秘。“祝融峰之高,方广寺之深,藏经殿之秀。水帘洞之奇”,名为“南岳四绝”,典型地概括了风物精华。“三教之盛为他山所无”,以其不同嵩华之近京都,秦岱之处要道,历多避乱隐居之士,而称“天下奥区”“非徒祝厘祈福之地”,更突出地强调了它的历史文化特色。种种描述,也提供了我们分析研究的线索和启示。
