As one of Britain’s most influential writers, Ian McEwan always shakes the audience with its unique plot and delicate language. Atonement can be described as a typical example. However, given the unique narrative techniques in the works, most scholars study the narrative point of view, narrative ethics and metafiction. Few scholars analyze the protagonist in the works suffered from the perspective of the trauma. Therefore, this dissertation intends to study the trauma of heroine in Atonement from Dominica La Capra’s concept of historic trauma and structural trauma, and Judith Herman’s trauma recovery theory, That is, to study Brioni’s source of trauma and the traumatic symptoms and to prove that it is in the process of actively responding to the trauma that Brioni has overcome a series of bad influences caused by the trauma.
