清代江南以繁荣富庶著称,却存在诸多的社会问题,阻葬盛行就是其中之一。阻葬是各种利用命案、尸骸进行敲诈勒索,阻扰丧葬以牟取私利的行为,其类型多样,成因复杂。阻葬造成了极大的困扰和危害,毒化社会风气,激化社会矛盾,增加勘验与丧葬成本,助长当地的丧葬弊俗。因此,根据阻葬的具体情形,国家与社会采取各种手段加以整顿和调控。其中,善会善堂通过提供一系列服务,成为整顿阻葬的主体力量,命案报验则成为清代中后期一项独特的善举。
