5403 healthy subjects were examined fortongue coating,tongue tissue proper,tonguebody and sublingual veins.Most of the healthysubjects had thin white coatings (75.88%),pin-kish tongue tissue proper (81.82%),and normaltongue bodies (68.20%).The abnormal tonguecoatings were usually yellow,creamy,anddenuded.The abnormal tongue tissue properwas mainly blue purple (11.85%).Fat tonguebodies were not rare in healthy subjects (20.99%).Normal sublingual veins were of single branch(83.77%),the length of which did not exceed 3/5that from the tongue tip to the end of the fre-num.Only 75 subjects (1.39%) had abnormaltongue veins.The incidence of varicose tongueveins was 6.35%.The diameter of the broadestnormal tongue veins was 2.00±0.37 mm.Tongueveins broader than 2.7 mm were consideredabnormal.
