The effect of phosphorus addition to silica for Partial oxidation of methane was studied. The results showed that the formaldehvde selectivity was improved as the result of phosphorus addition to silica and that the optimum phosphorus pentoxide contcnt on silica was 1.5%. The role of phosphorus as a promoter in silica catalyst to the formation of formaldehyde was discussed on the basis of catalvst characterizations bv XPS, IR and TG methods.
