According to statistics, one out of every 5,000 children suffers from congenital diseases due to deleterious genetic variations in mitochondrial DNA that often have a serious impact on a child’s heart, muscle, or other high-energy-consuming organs. As the children’s mitochondria are all from the mother, one solution is to transplant the nuclear DNA from the mother’s egg into the eggs of other women with healthy mitochondria whose nuclei have been cleared.
