I. Defense Production of Small and Medium-sized Countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States In the field of national defense industry in the former Soviet Union, military production and research mainly concentrated in Russia. However, many military enterprises and research institutes are located in the territory of other republics. According to the April 1991 issue of “Issues concerning economy and military transition”, the total number of Russian military and industrial complexes accounted for 78%, followed by Ukraine and Belarus, each accounting for 12% and 2.5%, and the rest of the Republic accounting for 7-5%.
