The main purpose of this paper is to make a descriptive analysis of the characteristics of the U.S. class structure within the framework of Marxism. The main argument put forward in this paper is based on the differences of the three kinds of status in the class structure: the status of the basic class; the opposition in the same mode of production; and the opposition between different modes of production. In a known mode of production, the basic class position is determined by the complete polarization in the social relations of production. On the other hand, the antagonism in a mode of production in turn determines a situation without such complete polarization. For example, managers dominate workers, who at the same time are dominated by the bourgeoisie. They can even exercise some of their power directly to exploit workers, but at the same time they are exploited by capitalists.
