All aluminum alloys contain hydrogen in an amount of 70-90% of the total gas content. The main source of hydrogen in aluminum is the generation of nascent hydrogen while reacting with aluminum to generate oxides. A second important source is hydrocarbons from underfired fuels or lubricants, as well as other organic materials that may be mixed into the melting charge. Others have also mentioned that the hydroxide film on the aluminum surface is also a source of hydrogen. Complete removal of hydrogen is industrially impossible, however, there are a number of ways to reduce its content to within the allowable range.
