It is reported that the lowland rice blight is due to the toxicity of iodine. This disease is called “Reclamation-Akagare” disease and is caused mainly in the paddy fields in the highlands. The initial symptoms are usually small necrotic spots on the leaves within 2-3 weeks after rice transplanting. Symptoms similar to the disease have emerged in paddy fields near the iodine separation plant in Kurosaki, Niigata, Japan, since 1974. To investigate the cause of the disease, it is necessary to determine the iodine content in rice plants and paddy soil. Determination of iodine in the sample can be redox, coulometric and ion-selective electrode method.
