有关清代民间艺人石玉昆的生平著述,前人曾做过不少研究,但是限于资料的缺乏,其中还有不少空白及误传。随着一些新资料的发现及研究的深入,对这一问题有重新进行考察的必要。现在基本可以确认,石玉昆主要生活在嘉庆、道光年间,《三侠五义》为其首创,《小五义》、《续小五义》为较晚的另一位民间艺人所创,与石玉昆无关。
