建始南方古猿化石发现于湖北西部的建始县高坪公社金塘大队一个龙骨洞中,同时还出土有巨猿牙齿化石和二十多种哺乳动物化石。兹后,建始巨猿就蜚声于学术界;而建始南方古猿却因化石标本少等原因而鲜为人知,尚未得到应有的重视。然而,南方古猿却在从猿到人的转变过程中占有极其重要的位置,仅就目前的认识水平而言,它们其中的一支可说是人类的直系祖先。迄今为止,世界发现的南方古猿化石主要集中于非洲,其它地区极为罕见。经过科学发掘而具有地层依据的建始南方古猿化石在中国是首次发现。
The beginning of the Southern apes fossils found in western Hubei Jianshi County Gaoping commune Jintang Brigade a keel hole, but also unearthed ape fossil teeth and more than 20 kinds of mammalian fossils. Since then, the great giant ape was established in the academic world; but the beginning of the Southern ape was scarce because of fossil specimens and other reasons little known, not yet due attention. However, the Australopithecus plays an extremely important role in the transformation from apes to humans. Only one of them can be regarded as a direct ancestor of humans at present level of understanding. To date, most of the Australopithecus fossils found in the world have been concentrated in Africa, while others are extremely rare. After scientific excavation and has the foundation of the founding of the Southern apes fossils found in China for the first time.
