Objective To study the protective effects of almonds on DNA oxidative damage and lipid peroxidation induced by smoking. Methods Sixty male smoking volunteers aged 18-25 years old were randomly divided into 2 groups of 30 patients. Each group was crossed with placebo (100 g pork, equivalent to calories provided by 84 g almonds) and 84 g Almonds, all lasting 4 weeks. The 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in 24 h urine samples were determined by HPLC, and the DNA strand breaks in lymphocytes were measured by comet assay. Results After almonds were added to smokers, DNA 8-OHdG, MDA and lymphocyte DNA were reduced by 28%, 23% and 34%, respectively, and serum vitamin E by 10%. Conclusion Almonds can effectively reduce DNA oxidative damage and lipid peroxidation caused by smoking.
