大众文化被认为是现代工业化社会的特殊产物,但作为西方文明的延续形态,也自然有其根源,在柏拉图的著作中就可见其端倪。柏拉图对艺术的批判,不仅是从其产生的原理上而言的,实际上也是针对着艺术在一定时期所表现出的一种特殊形态,即大众化,并对此提出了严厉的抨击,指出其种种危害。这种大众化虽非产生于工业化社会,但也可称为工业化社会大众文化的一种原生态;柏拉图的批评也可称为今天大众文化批评的先声,从中我们也可获得认识大众文化的一种历史性的维度。
