1994年1月12日,上海辞书出版社编审杨祖希的心脏停止止了跳动。尽管他年过古稀,早已退休,但是直到脑溢血病发之日,他仍在为上海辞书出版社审读稿件。从1957年进新知识出版社当编辑开始,他把自己后半辈子的精力全部奉献给了编辑事业,勤勤恳恳,兢兢业业,数十年如一日,为辞书编辑树立了楷模。 1958年中华书局辞海编辑所成立(1978年改名为上海辞书出版社),他调入该所工作,自此与《辞海》结下不解之缘。从修订《辞海》的筹备工作开始,直到《辞海》未定稿、1979年版和1989年版陆续问世,他参加了全过程。在此期间,他执笔起草了《〈辞海〉收词范围和各学科收词比例》、《〈辞海〉1979年版修订方案》、《〈辞海〉1989年版合订本汇编方案》、《〈辞海〉分册总体结构方案》等文件,经《辞海》编委会讨论修改定稿,成为指导《辞海》工作的规范性文件。
