Zhang Zhidong was the late chief of the Westernization School in the late Qing dynasty. He advocated the appointment of a key member of the New Deal in the early twentieth century. Although he did not preside over the Qing court’s handling of Japan’s affairs, the twists and turns of peculiar relations between China and Japan in recent years have been clearly reflected in his political opinions and practices and have shown distinctive rich content. I think this is a modern history of Sino-Japanese relations and Zhang Zhidong research can not be ignored. This dissertation attempts to analyze Zhang Zhidong’s changes in Japanese strategy and the modernization of its programs with a strong imitation of the Japanese and other aspects of some analysis, with a view to expanding the field of vision in this area.
